Well-designed skybridge can be a plus

After careful deliberation, I have decided to support the skybridge. My support, however, is conditional. First, the design must make the skybridge an icon for Salt Lake City. We deserve the most aesthetically pleasing structure possible. Second, the structure should not have moving walkways. Third, the city must not sell the air rights. Any lease must ensure that the crossing remain a "public way." In essence, we must make the skybridge an elevated public sidewalk, with easy access to and from the street.

With due respect to the arguments made by opponents regarding taking shoppers off Main Street, that is a completely separate issue. For several decades, Main Street has been without a vibrant pedestrian presence. Aside from outstanding businesses like Sam Weller's, Lamb's Cafe and the House of Kabob, Main Street generally lacks pedestrian activity. Few people in recent memory have departed the two fortress malls and turned south on Main Street. They have had little reason to do so. If we desire increased activity on Main Street, it will need to happen with a focus on each individual block.

I respect those who oppose the skybridge. Decisions such as this are difficult and require strong leadership. I believe that, under appropriate conditions, the skybridge can be a positive addition to our downtown and help bolster the success of the City Creek development.

Keith Christensen is a candidate for Salt Lake City mayor.
