Mitt shared credit with everyone. He was more than kind to me — introducing me to others, downplaying himself and always giving me more credit than I deserved. He was the same with members of SLOC but had a particular affection for the volunteers, who brought our community such high marks around the world because of their hard work and unfailing kindness. Mitt also readily admitted that he was far from perfect, highlighting for the media his top 10 list — the biggest mistakes we made at SLOC. He did receive a great deal of media attention, which was part of the territory. We had a "one voice" strategy. Mitt was our spokesman. He was superb in that role. It led to him getting most of the media attention, but he always gave credit to everyone but himself.

I vividly recall a conversation with Mitt regarding what each of us would do after the Games. After speculating on different possibilities, Mitt said, "It doesn't really matter what we do next, we just need to focus on putting on great Games." His focus was singular. He was working on the task at hand. Only near the very end did he seriously begin to consider alternatives. For Mitt, it really was a time to help restore integrity to the Olympic movement, restore the reputation of a community, celebrate the achievements of the athletes and to bring the world together in a unique setting less than five months after 9/11.

He is the most extraordinary leader with whom I have ever worked. He is brilliant, insightful, focused, knows how to lead and is a man of service and integrity. He knows how important it is to build a great team, which he did. He has an untiring sense of humor and is always high-energy. I worked hard just to keep up. I will always be grateful for his leadership in turning around a very difficult situation.
