Jazz have some holes to plug

Miller also has thoughts on who should replace Fisher at the 2 (shooting guard) spot.

Possibilities based on the Jazz's current roster include backup Gordan Giricek, though it's unknown if Sloan has enough faith to make him a full-time starter; 2006 first-round draft choice Ronnie Brewer, though with a previous shooting-guard he might have been used more at small forward (3); restricted free agent C.J. Miles, though he's still being developed and there are no assurances he'll return either; and 2007 first-round pick Morris Almond, though it would be out of character for Sloan to start a rookie full-time.

One other possibility: going back to the 2005-06 season lineup with starting small forward Andrei Kirilenko and backup Matt Harpring manning the 2/3 spots, even if Utah's bench would take a hit.

Miller's favorite?

"Jerry (Sloan) wouldn't like me saying it, (but) I like Ronnie Brewer," he said. "He's not a good outside shooter but he does so many other things. And we need slashers and somebody's who strong enough and young enough to get to the basket aggressively. ... And I love how he anticipates the ball on defense.

"I think he's good enough," Miller added, "that he deserves some time, at least to find out what he can do."

Another option is to find a starting 2 in the summer shopping market.

Utah is known to have expressed interest in, among others, free-agent swingmen Morris Peterson of Toronto, Devean George of Dallas and James Posey of Miami.

Peterson may be the top-target, but can the Jazz can land him?

One Jazz source suggests it's a real long shot because of so much interest from other teams.

And there's plenty of that.

Last week, the Toronto Sun called Peterson "possibly Utah-bound." Since then, though, the New York Daily News reported Peterson "could be the most viable option" for the Knicks; the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported the Cavaliers contacted him "shortly after the market opened" last weekend and that Peterson's interested because the Cavs are championship-caliber; the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported the Hornets "have expressed interest"; the Sacramento Bee confirmed that the Kings "called" about Peterson; the Miami Herald said the Heat have "contacted" him; and the Toronto Star identified the Nuggets and Pistons as "serious contenders" along with Utah.

Another Jazz source, meanwhile, suggested it remains possible Utah will secure an agreement with Peterson, who wants to start and supposedly does want to come here.

Whatever the Jazz do, it's clear they'll be headed down a different path than if Fisher had stayed. He's didn't stay, but suggests there still should be much hope in Utah anyway.
