2nd man charged in rollover
Eduardo Barrios-Socop, 35, of Guatemala is charged with one count of transporting illegal immigrants, resulting in death. The maximum for the crime is the death penalty although federal prosecutors say they have yet to decide whether or not they will seek that option.
Socop joins 24-year-old Eswin Enrique Lopez, who is charged with the same crime. Both men appeared in federal court on Thursday and entered pleas of not guilty. A jury trial has been scheduled in August.
The accident took place near Apple Valley in Washington County. Prosecutors claim Lopez was driving a truck with six others in the cab; all were from either Mexico or Guatemala, bound for Las Vegas. Lopez reportedly lost control of the truck and it rolled, fatally ejecting a 31-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man.
While prosecutors believe Lopez was the driver, they allege Socop helped to arrange the deadly trip.
Socop and Lopez were both indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury.
