But with an impressive fifth-place showing in the 7-stage Dauphine Libere in France, Zabriskie may have secured his participation in the world's grandest race.
Zabriskie finished 2:16 behind the winner after six strong stages. Former Salt Lake resident Levi Leipheimer was suffering from a stomach bug and finished well back in the overall standings but sent a message to the peloton with a big effort in the final stage where he challenged for the win until a slippery road helped cause a crash in the final five kilometers of the race.
Leipheimer is expected to be the strongest American in July's Tour de France and is Discovery Channel's leader.
RIDE OF THE WEEK: Of course, not every cyclist is obsessed with speed and winning races. Hundreds of cyclists will gather in Cache Valley this weekend for the Harmon's MS 150 ride supporting research and treatment of multiple sclerosis.
With two days' worth of riding, several thousand miles will be logged by expert and casual cyclists alike. With short rides or full 150-mile options available, there's something for everyone.
