Utah Democratic Party leaders plan to produce a series of "informative vignettes" in an attempt to clarify misconceptions. The vignettes will be posted on www.utdemocrats.org.

Utahns for Public Schools leaders say they also plan to kick off a multipronged approach along with doing some heavy-duty fund raising to support the campaign. Lisa Johnson, spokeswoman for the group, said a large part of the effort will take place in communities since it is an issue that is close to home.

"Historically Utahns have rejected vouchers, and when people understand how it works they are going to understand this is not the best policy," Johnson said.

The first-of-its-kind universal private school voucher program would provide Utah families with a $500 to $3,000 voucher, scaled to income, to send their child to private school.

It also would appropriate $9.2 million for mitigation money to hold schools fiscally unharmed for five years after a student leaves and goes to a private school.
