"We're not complaining about the guys and ladies in the trenches," Bayless said. "We just never really know what we're spending our money on."

Several residents and officers asked why the city should make a change if the service is exceptional.

"You've been together for so long, it seems to me strange that you'd want to separate," said Andrew Engemann, who lives in Lindon and works for Orem and Pleasant Grove EMS. "You've got a great thing going on, just work it out."

Five cities contract with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office to receive police services — Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, Riverton, Bluffdale and Herriman. The contract is administered by the Law Enforcement Administrative Control Board, which includes the five mayors.

In 2003, Draper broke away from the county and formed its own police department, followed by Taylorsville in 2005.

The Lindon council plans further discussion at its meeting next Tuesday, at which time it could make a final decision on the police force.
