However, SUWA has viewed the public land office as opposed to some federal policies designed to protect the environment.

"Under Stevens, there was a pretty narrow agenda that was anti-federal government, pro-development," said Steve Bloch, staff attorney for the alliance. He said he hopes that Stevens' replacement will take a moderate stance more in line with what Utahns are looking for from their state government.

With that and "leadership from the government," he said, people of Utah may find some common ground on environmental issues.

Bloch said the group is hoping that Stevens' resignation will clear the path for better environmental stewardship from the governor's office.

"We were disappointed when Stevens was appointed and we're disappointed in the policies that Stevens pursued in his tenure working for the governor," he added.

Asked if the resignation marks some philosophical difference or a change of direction, Mike Mower, spokesman for Huntsman, said, "No."

The governor will soon announce a replacement for Stevens, Mower said.

Stevens was the recipient of Boyden's letter of resignation. While Boyden could not be reached immediately for comment, Stevens said he thinks the reason was similar to his own. "He's a grandfather, with grandchildren all over the West, and has not had any opportunity at all to spend time with them," Stevens said.

Mower said Huntsman looks forward to continue working with Stevens in his role as a San Juan County commissioner. Last week, Huntsman appointed Stevens to serve as a trustee for the College of Eastern Utah. Before it becomes official, the appointment must be confirmed by the Utah Senate.

Huntsman values Stevens, Mower added. "He sincerely appreciates Lynn's concern for Utahns and our public lands."
