From Deseret News archives:
'Cycle Salt Lake' week heaped with events
The weeklong celebration of all things bicycle-related begins Saturday with the Live Green Festival at Library Square and a mountain bike tour along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail Sunday at 2 p.m.
Organizations such as the Salt Lake Bike Collective and UTA will sponsor events during the week.
While most of the week will focus on recreational or commuter biking, there will also be something for the serious cyclist.
Criterium races will be held Tuesday at Rocky Mountain Raceways and Wednesday at the DMV training course in West Valley.
On Saturday, those wishing to test their legs can ride the Salt Lake Century from the State Fairpark out to Antelope Island and back.
Got Legs?: There is no shortage of long bicycle rides you can take and also help out a good cause. Most of them involve a lot of miles, a lot of smiles and some of the best company you can find on two wheels.
A week after that, the Tour de Cure ride rolls out from Brigham City with 25-, 60- and 100-mile rides benefiting the American Diabetes Association. Tour de France winner Greg LeMond will be part of the June 9 ride. Call 1-888-342-2383 or visit tour.diabetes.org for registration and team sponsorship information.
The two-day MS 150 ride will be held June 23-24 and rolls out of the Cache County Fairgrounds with proceeds helping out the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Businesses and individuals can get involved by calling 424-0113.
Racer's update: Last weekend saw wet and wild weather test racers in a pair of events. Bart Gillespie dominated the mountain bike field throughout the 43-mile course at the Showdown at 5-mile Pass in the hills above Lehi.
A little farther north, the boys from Sienna Development/Goble Knee Clinic endured 60 miles of sand blown into their faces and left Antelope Island with the desired results.
