Yet part of that service is also to press forward. "The best way to prepare for your future does not consist of merely dreaming about it. ... Tools do not work and serve mankind until skilled hands take them up."

President Monson was joined by six other community leaders, also receiving honorary doctorates for their service to the university and larger community. They are:

A. Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Zions First National Bank; U.S. Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah; L. Ralph Mecham, director of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts; Mickey Ibarra, Latino community advocate and Clinton administration director of intergovernmental affairs; Carmen B. Pingree, namesake of the Carmen B. Pingree School for Children with Autism; and James L. Sorenson, medical products inventor and entrepreneur.

The U.'s prestigious Rosenblatt Prize, which comes with a $40,000 cash award, went to biology professor Mary C. Beckerle, executive director of Huntsman Cancer Institute.
