The Utah County Health Department will provide meningococcal vaccine for only $5 today from 1 to 6 p.m.

Bacterial meningitis is a serious disease that can cause brain damage, strokes, seizures and death. Recent meningococcal meningitis cases in Utah — especially in dormitory-style living conditions — have prompted the Utah County Health Department to hold the clinic.

The meningococcal vaccine normally costs $102. The UCHD will accept cash or check only for the vaccine at the time of the clinic, 151 S. University Ave. in Provo. No appointment is necessary, but supplies are limited.

The UCHD especially hopes to see teenagers and young adults who are at highest risk due to current or future dormitory-style living. Anyone who is missing their spleen or has an immune system disorder may be at increased risk and is encouraged to participate.

The vaccine will be available to anyone 11 to 55 years of age.

For information on meningococcal diseases, visit www.cdc.gov/ncidod/DBMD/diseaseinfo/meningococcal_g.htm. For questions about the clinic call 851-7025.
