That idea was contingent on a review by the county's Debt Review Committee of the team's finances. When the review was complete and was critical of the team's finances and plans, Corroon dropped the county-funding deal. That's when the state stepped in.

Wilson is now calling on Real to turn over the $7.5 million within two weeks. If that doesn't happen, she wants the state to "walk away from the deal and use the funding for a community purpose," according to a statement released Sunday by her campaign.

"The state gave away the store to Real," she said. "The state deal has no written requirements. It's clear that Real has no interest in a true community partnership. They're just taking what they can."

Becker said his legislative vote in favor of the state deal was based on what was presented as "a straightforward arrangement." The state was going to provide money, and Real Salt Lake was committing to several important contributions to the community, including the $7.5 million for the soccer complex.

"It has completely surprised me that Real Salt Lake is now proposing different terms," he said.

But he added that he is "confident" Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. will hold Real to the terms lawmakers believed were in place.

Buhler, meanwhile, believes Becker and Wilson are airing their criticisms of the Real plan in an attempt "to make up for the fact that they voted to send soccer to Sandy."

He said the Fairpark deal made more sense economically for everyone involved — city residents, county residents and the team.
