From Deseret News archives:
This is 'Shear Genius'!
Who would have thought they could turn a competition among fashion designers into something as addictive (and successful) as "Project Runway"? Or that they could follow that up with the equally addictive "Top Chef"?
Or that they could follow that with a competition among interior designers, "Top Design" which at least one critic (that would be me) finds more entertaining than "Runway" or "Chef"?
The finale of "Top Design" (11 p.m., Bravo) even has one finalist to root for (Matt Lorenz) and one to root against (Carisa Perez-Fuentes).
What more could you ask?
And, directly following the declaration of a winner on "Design," Bravo segues into the Wonderful World of Hair a competition among stylists cleverly titled "Shear Genius" (midnight, Bravo). (The show moves up an hour next week; repeats air throughout the week.)
Eventually, the winner will get $100,000, a chance to style hair for an Allure magazine feature and the title "Shear Genius."
As with its predecessors, this show is all about the personalities involved. It's overly dramatic, campy, silly and entertaining.
There's even a hometown favorite to root for. Tyson Daniel, 31 known as 'The Wizard' by his clients is a Salt Lake native who had just sold his salon (TD) and moved to Los Angeles when "Shear Genius" was casting.
Daniel signed on so he could "show an elevated perspective on hair design that could inspire both the public and fellow hair designers."
And a chance to become famous and win $100,000 was pretty good incentive, too.
TONIGHT'S SEASON FINALE perhaps series finale is not one of the better episodes of "Friday Night Lights" (7 p.m., Ch. 5).
Yet I'll give it a rousing cheer for what it is a payoff for the show's fans. And there haven't been nearly enough of them as this high-quality show has limped through a full season with far fewer viewers than it deserves.
The finale centers on reports that coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) has accepted another job on the eve of his team's game for the Texas state championship. And his wife has some big news for him, too.
