Houston looks like team to beat in West

From top to bottom, MLS's Western Conference should be extremely competitive in 2007.

A year ago, the distance between first and last was 13 points, but that gap will likely shrink as all six West teams figure to be in the hunt for a playoff spot this year. Exactly who gets in and who watches from home will probably be undecided until the final weekend.

Defending MLS Cup champion Houston is the obvious front runner, however, as it returns every starter from last year's title-winning team. Assuming complacency doesn't set in, Houston should make another playoff run.

With the Major League Soccer season kicking off this weekend, here's a look at sports writer James Edward's predictions for the 2007 season.

1. Houston Dynamo

2006 RECORD: 11-8-13 (46 points)

CONFERENCE FINISH: Second, MLS Cup Champs

COACH: Dominic Kinnear (fourth season)

FIRST-CHOICE STARTING 11: Pat Onstad (K), Wade Barrett (D), Craig Waibel (D), Eddie Robinson (D), Kelly Gray (D), Ricardo Clark (M), Brian Mullan (M), Dwayne DeRosario (M), Brad Davis (M), Brian Ching (F), Paul Dalglish (F).

STRENGTHS: A year ago at this time, many were wondering how the Dynamo would respond after being relocated from San Jose in the offseason. The players responded by finishing second in the Western Conference and ultimately hoisting the MLS Cup. Every starter from that team is back, so there's no reason they can't duplicate the feat. In fact, the players have their eyes on a few other prizes as well this year. Houston should battle for the MLS Supporters Shield for the best regular season record, not to mention that it's already in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals and will participate in the inaugural SuperLiga later this summer.

CONCERNS: The biggest concern is that busy schedule. In addition to the reality that several of its starters will be away with the U.S. National Team because of the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer, Houston's depth will get a stern test. Realistically, that might be the only thing that prevents Houston from winning the West.

2. L.A. Galaxy

2006 RECORD: 11-15-6 (39 points)

CONFERENCE FINISH: Fifth

COACH: Frank Yallop (first full season)
