Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will report more than $12.5 million in contributions for the first quarter, according to his campaign. Some of his total, too, was raised in Utah. McCain, who is supported by Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., collected more than $150,000 during an overnight visit to Utah earlier this month.

McCain's total contributions, however, fell short of expectations.

"Although we are pleased with the organization we've built and polls show us strongly positioned in key primary states, we had hoped to do better in first-quarter fund-raising," his campaign manager, Terry Nelson, said in a statement. "We are already in the process of taking the necessary steps to ensure fund-raising success moving forward. Fund-raising in the first quarter is no more important than fund-raising throughout the entire primary election campaign."

Meanwhile, on the Democrats' side, Clinton reported $36 million for the first quarter, with $26 million raised since Jan. 20 and $10 million transferred from her successful Senate re-election campaign, according to her presidential campaign office.

"We are overwhelmed by the tremendous enthusiasm and historic response this campaign has received so far," her campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, said in a statement. "Going forward, we are poised to continue this success and make even more history."

Republican Phil Gramm of Texas and Democrat Al Gore of Tennessee hold the high-water mark for first quarter receipts: $8.7 million for Gramm in 1995 and $8.9 million for Gore in 1995. Gramm dropped out before New Hampshire held that election's first primary.
