The censor duo — who weren't made available for interviews — use a number of sources to keep up with the ever-changing lingo such as English and foreign-language online dictionaries, insultmonger.com, slangsearch.com, acronymfinder.com, drugs.indiana.edu, etc. They also consult people in the community who are familiar with gangs, ethnic cultures, the drug culture and so forth.

They have to recognize that AUTOICE is a drug. They have to realize that something is wrong with QUADPLY (foreplay). Or that SWAG is marijuana. The censors have to be on their toes. What's wrong with X32LARO? Try spelling it backward.

For 10 years a man drove around with KILLER tags until finally someone complained. It was his nickname, he explained to authorities. The plate was recalled. He applied instead for RELLIK and it was approved. Later, someone realized it was KILLER spelled backward — or forward if viewed in a rear-view mirror. The plate was recalled.

Some are more obvious. MMMBEER didn't make the cut. Neither did LUV2PUF. Or GUNSLGTR, KRACKER, RDRAGE, SNIPER, IH8U. WHO2TED is out; it's a body function. Ditto for LMAO — Internet slang for laughing off a certain body part.

Roberts provided a long list of license plates that have been rejected.

Actually, most of them.

They're the kind of thing a high school sophomore might write on a bathroom wall.

Some of those that made the cut: JAZZFAN, SATAN, GAYSROK, PD4BYEX, LDSRU2, TOOTHDR, RMBR911, IM4BEEF, VEGAN.

If people put this much effort into their jobs, they could create cold fusion and cure cancer.

Next time you're on the road, on your way to, say, the TOOTHDR or DLCTRCH (Delicate Arch), better WTCHOUT for illegal vanity plates and don't drink MERLOT or you might ZZZZZZ or become a RELLIK.
