VERNAL — An 87-year-old rancher attacked by two cows has died, his daughter said.

Cecil Holmes of Vernal died Tuesday at University of Utah Hospital, a week after he was knocked down while moving cows to a pen from a field, daughter Doylene Timothy said.

Holmes suffered chest injuries, including broken ribs and punctured lungs, she said.

The cows charged and knocked him down, then head-butted him several times while he was on the ground. Timothy saw her father fall and called police before chasing the animals away.
