'Twin Peaks' on DVD
TV series
"Twin Peaks: The Second Season" (CBS/Paramount, 1990-91, six discs, $61.99). The long-awaited DVD release of the second season of David Lynch's bizarre serial will please fans, but, of course, it doesn't really end. It just stops, leaving plot lines galore to dangle.
That's the network's fault for abruptly canceling the show. And Lynch's follow-up feature film, "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me," doesn't help; it's a prequel! But fans will be happy to complete their "Twin Peaks" sets (the two-hour pilot and seven-episode first season were released separately several years ago; both are now out of print).
In this second season the show becomes even more enigmatic and bizarre, if that's possible. Kyle MacLachlan stars as FBI agent Dale Cooper, investigating murder and an array of offbeat goings-on in the Pacific Northwest title town. Answers to questions who killed Laura Palmer? who shot Cooper in the Season 1 finale? are slow in coming, but they do come. And then there are many more questions to replace them.
Extras: Full frame, 22 episodes, featurettes, Log-Lady introductions
"Law & Order: The Fifth Year" (Universal, 1994-95, five discs, $59.98). This is one of the Chris Noth years, with Jerry Orbach, Jill Hennessy, Steven Hill, S. Epatha Merkerson and, of course, the ever-present Sam Waterston. Guests this season include Regina Taylor, Edie Falco and Gina Torres.
Extras: Widescreen, 23 episodes, featurette
"Roseanne: The Complete Seventh Season" (Anchor Bay, 1994-95, four discs, $39.98). Outrageousness rules in this season, with episodes devoted to such serious issues as abortion, alcoholism, drug abuse and racial prejudice. Guests include Ellen DeGeneres, Sharon Stone, Shelley Winters and Sandra Bernhard.
Extras: Full frame, 25 episodes
"Full House: The Complete Sixth Season" (Warner, 1992-93, four discs, $29.98). More adventures with Bob Saget, John Stamos and the rest of the cast in this silly but popular series, highlighted by a trip to Disney World.
Extras: Full frame, 24 episodes
"Mind of Mencia: Uncensored Season 2" (Comedy Central/Paramount, 2007, two discs, $26.99). Typically vulgar Comedy Central show, but not really very funny. Strictly for fans of Carlos Mencia.
Extras: Full frame, deleted scenes, bloopers
"Tom Goes to the Mayor: The Complete Series: Businessman's Edition" (Warner, 2004, three discs, $34.98). Another show from Adult Swim, which specializes in cartoons for adults. Here, Tom Peters presents oddball ideas to The Mayor of Jefferton, who invariably accepts them, however misguided. Voices include Bob Odenkirk, Dave Foley, Gary Busey, Judd Hirsch, Janeane Garofalo and Garry Shandling.
