It is something that has not gone unnoticed, said Jonathan Wagstaff, operator of the Adventure Haus at Zermatt Resort and Spa in Midway.

"Already this year," he noted, "we've put together a number of ski and golf packages ... skiing in the morning and golfing in the afternoon. We've also had a lot of requests for skiing and mountain biking. Skiing and fly fishing on the Provo (River) is another package we're getting requests for.

"The No. 1 activity people who come to Zermatt want at this time of year is skiing. Snowmobiling is second and cross country skiing is third. But then they want other things. They want to do things they haven't done or can't do in their home state. That's what makes this area so unique. There are so many things to do and so many things that are possible."

Jason Giles, executive and marketing director for the Heber Valley Chamber of Commerce, said his office receives calls "on a daily basis from people asking about various activities, usually about skiing or snowmobiling, and at this time of year about horseback riding, hiking and biking trails and golf.

"We get a fair number of people coming over from Park City looking for things to do after a morning of skiing. We met with a travel company from Europe recently that wanted to know about cross country skiing down Guardsmans Pass, then being picked up and driven to a golf course. They felt this would be an extremely popular package."

Ski resorts have, for years, recognized the fact that people are interested in more activities, especially since the introduction of high-speed lifts. Skiers are able to get in more runs in a shorter period of time, which leaves time in a day for other activities.

Heber Valley has long been recognized as having a potpourri of recreational activities available, most requiring very little drive time to get from one to another.

Wagstaff also pointed out that variety is not limited to adult visitors.

The Kids Klub at Zermatt puts together a series of daily activities for its charges, including nature hikes and classroom crafts and outdoor skills classes.

"One of our more popular family activities last year involved a train ride (Heber Creeper) up to Soldier Hollow, where guests unloaded their mountain bikes and rode, then returned to be picked up by train for the ride home.

"Sometimes we suggest doing multiple activities. We can do that with smaller groups. Sometimes people ask about doing as many activities as they can in the time they have. They want to do things they normally couldn't do or wouldn't do, like ski and golf in the same day."
