Following years of discussion, the brand-new 1A/2A classification will finally spring to action in boys soccer.

Undoubtedly, the new league has the potential to help prep soccer grow around the state. It will be composed of schools that formerly competed at the 3A level and in the old Region 17 league. It will also contain new soccer teams such as Beaver and Meridian.

Waterford will be jumping up to 3A after this year, but the tiny private school is the heavy favorite to win the 1A/2A league in its lone season here.

St. Joseph and Rowland Hall have each developed outstanding soccer programs, and they should lead the chase. Also, Christian Heritage, which dominated Region 17 a year ago, should be fairly solid.

Class 2A coaches' preseason rankings

1. Waterford

2. St. Joseph

3. Rowland Hall

4. Christian Heritage

5. Millard
