"We need to continue speaking out for our health, and our elected officials must continue to listen — whether it's about resumed testing or the storage of nuclear waste. Utah is not America's dumping ground."

• J Truman, who lives in Malad, Idaho, is a former resident of southern Utah who heads Downwinders United: "The death of Divine Strake clearly shows that the population downwind of the test site have taken their active participation very seriously, and have said, 'No! Never again!' And hopefully the message will be received that it isn't just Divine Strake, it means no resumed testing ever. We will not have another cancer-riddled generation of us created."

• Mary Dixon, a Downwinder who lives in Salt Lake City: "We thought this would be a long, drawn-out fight. This is obviously a very happy day for us. It just shows that the will of the people prevailed."

• Michelle Thomas, St. George, who has battled cancers that are tied to exposure to fallout from nuclear blasts: "I'm so thrilled. I just started crying as soon as I heard the news."

• Eleanor Fanire of Kingman, Ariz.: "It paid to be strong. We told our people not to quit. ... As Americans united we stand together."
