WEST VALLEY CITY — West Valley City leaders want the Utah Legislature to use the Transportation Investment Fund, not tolling, as a method to pay for the Mountain View Corridor.

A resolution unanimously passed by the City Council on Tuesday night says the TIF, which is designated for projects that expand road capacity, is "a more appropriate option for funding the Mountain View Corridor."

"The City Council isn't necessarily against tolling," Councilman Joel Coleman said. "We understand that tolling can be very effective, but we feel (the TIF) would be a better funding mechanism for this particular road."

In the resolution, the City Council encourages state officials to consider "all reasonable measures to support the funding and construction" of the Mountain View Corridor.

City councils in South Jordan and West Jordan previously passed resolutions urging lawmakers to oppose the use of tolls on the proposed 40-mile freeway in western Salt Lake County and northwest Utah County. Similar resolutions are being considered in several cities along the proposed route.

Although state and local leaders agree the road is needed to keep traffic flowing on the rapidly growing west side, Utah Department of Transportation officials have said no funding exists for the estimated $2 billion project.

The Utah Transportation Commission is considering whether Mountain View should be built as a toll road, which would reduce the state's portion of that cost to an estimated $600 million.
