The West Jordan City Council has taken a stand against the use of tolling on the Mountain View Corridor, and it's urging the state Legislature to do the same.

The City Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday night stating its opposition to imposing tolls on the proposed 40-mile freeway in western Salt Lake County and northwest Utah County.

"There's a ground swell in the west-side cities that tolling is not going to be in the best interest of our residents," West Jordan City Councilman Rob Bennett said. "We want to go on record as being opposed to (tolling the Mountain View Corridor)."

The resolution was a modified version of one passed by the South Jordan City Council on Dec. 19. Similar resolutions are being considered in several cities along the proposed freeway route.

Copies of the resolution have been sent to representatives from West Jordan in the state Legislature, encouraging them to join the opposition, Bennett said.

Utah Department of Transportation officials have said no funding exists for the estimated $2 billion west-side freeway.

The state Transportation Commission is considering whether Mountain View should be built as a toll road, which would reduce the state's portion of that cost to an estimated $600 million.
