SOUTH JORDAN — South Jordan city staff soon will begin offering a free civic-education program designed to give residents a comprehensive, hands-on overview of city government.

South Jordan University classes will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 15 to April 5 at the Gale Center of History and Culture, 10300 W. Beckstead Lane, South Jordan.

"This seven-week citizens' academy is a great opportunity for interested community members to get an insider's view of where the city is going, learn how the city operates and help to build a great community together," said Gary Whatcott, South Jordan's deputy city manager. "We believe it will build relationships that will strengthen our entire community."

Each week, residents will be able to take part in activities that illustrate how the city functions. Sessions will cover areas of city government such as planning and engineering, the police department, the City Council and finance. Participants will get to see how decisions are made, how city funds are allocated and how city departments operate with each other.

Refreshments will be served each week, and participants who complete the program will be honored at a special City Council meeting in April.

"The objective of South Jordan University is to involve and engage people in learning about the operation of city government," said Chip Dawson, South Jordan neighborhood services coordinator. "It's important for people to be involved and to bring a true partnership to how we address community issues."

Residents are invited to register online at www.sjc.utah.gov, at City Hall, 1600 Towne Center Drive, or by calling 254-3742. The classes are free, but enrollment is limited to 30 participants.
