The University of Utah ROTC program was honored Wednesday with the Western Region Brigade Challenge award, given to an institution that is considered the "best large school" in a region that includes California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.

Criteria used in deciding which school gets the award include looking at grade-point averages, recruiting, retention, physical fitness and training scores. The training scores come from a 33-day training program at Fort Lewis, Wash., where cadets must show off skills in leadership, weapons training, combat patrol and communication.
