"While some guys love their job out there, some feel frustration because they don't really have a choice to be there," Cannon said. "It's a terrible event, the war on terror, and to most of us, it doesn't make sense to fight terror with terror."

War, he said, needs to be the nation's very last defense. Pulling the troops from Iraq does not dishonor the soldiers but, in fact, honors them more.

"A box and a flag doesn't honor them," he said. "A fight does."

Naturalist and author Terry Tempest Williams also spoke at the event, urging the public to help end the war by making it their No. 1 priority.

"What we need to ask now is not what's keeping us in the war, but why, we, the people, have allowed it," said Williams, who is a Utah native. "This is an epic moment, and it's time to return home to our humanity."

Although Williams admitted that her ties to the war are abstract — saying she has no family involved nor knows a lot about wars — she said the people, not the government can put an end to it.

"We must step forward and say 'We've had enough.'"
