Popgadget.net: If you would rather skip over the flood of breaking tech news — and are shopping for a woman's gift — try Popgadget. This site reviews female-friendly tech toys, like a $69 pen that is also a PDA stylus and USB drive, and other gizmos, such as a $3,000 grill for tailgating. A fraction of the items reviewed, such as the ROLLERtoaster, which uses a narrow beam of heat that toasts bread as it is passed through a slot, aren't available yet. But the site features a broad range of items — like a cereal dispenser or a funky $19.95 case for an iPod Nano — that could be great for gifts. Running the site, and its 15 writers, is a full-time job for editor Mia Kim, who used to work at Sony/BMG Entertainment.

Perfume

Aromascope.com: This site spotlights interesting and eclectic perfumes from small and large brands, such as L'Artisan Parfumeur and Hermes. Its descriptions can be a bit flowery — editor Ina Prouty, a former office manager, describes Tom Ford's Black Orchid as "bitterly dirty and edibly creamy" — but the notes are thorough and entertaining. The site's link to perfume guides that describe the difference between "floral" and "fresh" scents, for instance, is a helpful resource for perfume novices. Most product reviews link to small boutiques that sell the scents.

Kids

Babygadget.net: A good source of gift ideas for babies and their parents, this site reviews a wide selection of baby gear, from a $180 sand tray to $35 custom lunchboxes. Reflecting the interests of editor Jenna Park, a work-at-home designer with two young daughters, the selection is geared toward people with babies and toddlers, with items like a stylish shoulder bag that converts to a baby blanket and a smock with multiple pockets for crayons. Items like HD camcorders for recording family memories could be a hit with parents too.

Watches

Watchreport.com: If you can't decide between a watch with CallerID or one with GPS, this site can help. Christian Cantrell, a software engineer and watch enthusiast, meticulously reviews the latest men's watches with an eye for details like how they sit on your wrist, the feel of the buttons and if you really need multiple time-zone access. The site can go awhile without being updated. Mr. Cantrell tries to stick to watches on the market and in a reasonable price range — like the $95 Fossil Twist series — but sometimes covers watches that are available only in Asia.
