When he comes to Salt Lake City, Samuels will be drawing from "Mosaic," as well as other, less recent material. "There's a whole bunch of people that listen to records and think that they hear the record, and they're going to hear exactly the same thing when they go and hear the music. That's not what this whole genre of music is really about. The music is alive, and you get to experience a version of it the night that it happens."

While the Caribbean Jazz Project may be Samuels' most recent "project," it's certainly not his first. He initially gained experience performing in front of large audiences and being on the road as a member of the Gerry Mulligan Sextet. He was also a member of Spyro Gyra for 17 years and has performed with diverse artists such as Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, the Yellowjackets, Pat Metheny, Bruce Hornsby and Frank Zappa.

Samuels said he's looking forward to performing in Salt Lake City, and on the JazzSLC series in particular, as he's been impressed and inspired by the people behind the GAM Foundation, which sponsors the concerts. "People doing something like that with their passion and sharing it with other people is an incredible gift for everyone. I wish there were more people out their realizing their passions like those that are involved with this."
