Roens' "Invocation," for soprano, cello and piano, will receive its world premiere Thursday. It's a cycle of three songs. "The first and third are Homeric hymns and the second is a Jewish Sabbath prayer," Maurer explained.

Rounding out the concert is Olivier Messiaens' "The Black Bird," for flute and piano. "It's from 1952, and it's a mainstay of the flute repertoire."

Maurer said the concert will be an interesting blend of works. "We're tapping the whole tapestry of music. Different ideas, styles and musicality are represented. I suppose it's a little capsule of my vision."

In addition to Maurer and Funicelli, clarinetist Robert Walzel, cellist Nicole Jackson, pianist Melissa Livengood and soprano Cheryl Hart will perform.
