The Utah chapter of the Sierra Club announced on Thursday its endorsement of Proposition 3 in Salt Lake County. The proposition asks voters whether the county should levy a quarter-cent sales-tax hike for transportation improvement.

Marc Heileson, regional representative for the Sierra Club, said that his group is confident that TRAX and transit will receive a majority of the sales-tax money. No specific projects have been identified yet to receive money from the tax hike.

County mayors and members of the Salt Lake County Council will decide what projects will receive funding after the election. They must first get approval from the Legislature, however, of a process for picking those projects.

"We trust this group of mayors and know they're going to do the right thing," said Heileson.

Over 3,000 members of the Sierra Club live in Salt Lake County.
