Parents of disabled criticize cuts

State officials don't show at meeting on Medicaid

"Ashdown supports one government program that would provide health care for all Americans," said deputy campaign manager Brett Garner. "But this is something that can be addressed immediately."

He was surprised that other candidates didn't attend.

"This is evidence that a voice is only heard if you can give money to a campaign," he said. "These people have nothing to give; they've paid enough."

Brandon Smith has been told Medicaid funding doesn't cover a 30-mile trip for a nurse to travel to Tooele from Salt Lake City to care for his disabled daughter. She remains in a hospital, being cared for there.

"This goes to show that the powerful people on the hill have chosen to be like our children, with deaf ears and blind eyes," Smith said.

The Disabled Rights Action Committee is assisting the families who have received cuts to make their voices heard, organizing meetings with various lawyers and lawmakers.
