HERRIMAN — A construction worker just arriving at work Monday morning was killed after being hit twice while crossing the street.

Bryan Mayhew, 50, of West Valley, parked his car near a field off the main road near 12700 South and 6000 West about 7 a.m., said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Jaroscak. He got out to cross the street to the site of a new church under construction, walked about 25 feet and into the path of a car.

The impact threw Mayhew into the other traffic lane where a car heading in the opposite direction hit him a second time, Jaroscak said.

Although it was dark, Jaroscak said the accident happened in a wide-open rural area where there would have been nothing to obstruct Mayhew's view of the oncoming vehicles that had on their headlights.

"Why he didn't see the car coming toward him we're unsure," he said.

Mayhew died en route to the hospital.
