Early returns indicate Cougs, not Utes are for real

Guy must have had the same thought, because he let Nelson play for much of the final quarter of the Aggies' loss to Idaho Saturday. Of course it wouldn't be fair to do what Utah did to Alex Smith a few years ago and never play Nelson again the rest of the year. At 0-5 and with nothing else to lose, the Ags should hand Nelson the reins and see what happens. He can't be any worse than the quarterback who has thrown five interceptions for touchdowns already this year ...

I wonder what Aggie fans, who were so anxious to run Dave Arslanian out of town seven years ago after he was on the job just two years, are thinking now. Arslanian at least won four games his second year and lost an overtime game to BYU and barely lost to Boise State. It would be an absolute miracle if the Aggies win four games this year ...

At least the Aggies' Western Athletic Conference looks way better than the Mountain West Conference. Besides Boise's thumping of Utah Saturday, Nevada crushed UNLV 31-3 and San Jose State — San Jose State! — trounced San Diego State 31-10. At least Colorado State saved a little face for the MWC by beating Fresno State 35-23 ...

And finally, did anyone notice who one of the stars was in Florida's win over Alabama Saturday? Yep, it was cornerback Ryan Smith who intercepted two passes in the Gator victory, including one at a crucial point. That's the same Ryan Smith, who started as a freshman at Utah under Urban Meyer and was benched last year as a sophomore after Meyer left, before transferring to Florida this year to play for Meyer again.
