Before the closing of "The Intimate Eye: Drawings by Burton Silverman" and "Just Enough Is More: The Graphic Design of Milton Glaser," visit Brigham Young University's Museum of Art and experience how vital and indispensable great drawing and design is to successful art.

Glaser's exhibit — on display in the Marian Adelaide Morris Cannon Gallery through Oct. 7 — explores the conceptual development of the artist's work from preliminary drawings to finished designs.

Museum visitors will immediately recognize much of Glaser's work, especially his poster of Bob Dylan and the constantly copied "I Love New York." With approximately 170 works on display, Glaser proves that his theory of not holding to any particular design style — something he is very proud of — has given him some of the best graphic design and illustration of the late 20th century.

By employing watercolor, pastel, graphite, lithography, collage, colored pencil, paint and assorted other mediums, the artist offers both humor and poignancy through bold line and brilliant color.

And Glaser's comments — presented on impressive museum placards — are replete with pontificating passages on the making of art; they're almost as good as the artwork itself.

Silverman's exhibit — on display in the M. Seth & Maurine D. Horne Study Gallery through Nov. 25 — showcases 33 realist drawings that illustrate his prowess.

His work has been on the covers of Time Magazine, Newsweek and New York Magazine. He's won (as has Glaser) myriad awards over his lifetime and has been inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame.

This exhibit doesn't have the visual flash of Glaser's, but it's not supposed to. Silverman's charcoal and graphite drawings are meant to be simply admired for their execution and ability to capture the soul of the sitter.
