WEST JORDAN — The West Jordan City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to ask the mayors of several southern Salt Lake County cities to meet and discuss options for a proposed sewage-treatment plant.

"They are not taking care of their own communities," said West Jordan Assistant City Manager Tom Steele. "And the district is not taking responsibility. They want to be pushed into making a decision."

Steele recommended that the council forward the issues of the currently overloaded sewage district to a meeting of the mayors to "outline possibilities and options and request immediate action."

As it stands, the area is in need of a second sewage-treatment facility, Steele said, but member cities have not agreed on a site. West Jordan City Council members expressed worry that such an issue could curb the city's potential for growth and create problems in the future.

West Jordan already houses the South Valley Water Reclamation Facility, which could be expanded to treat sewage. However, the South Valley Sewer District has tentative plans to build near the Jordan River in Riverton.

The current plans have stirred up controversy and prompted court action. A 3rd District Court judge in July denied the district's appeal, stating its current plans would have a negative impact on the area.
