Utah taxes by the numbers

• As of Aug. 31, 2006, 1,001,929 state income tax returns had been filed for the 2005 tax year. For the 2004 tax year, the state reported 998,591 returns filed.

• The number of electronic returns increased 16.4 percent in the 2005 tax year, to 552,541. The number of paper filings dropped 9.4 percent to 449,388.

• Of the returns filed this year, 77 percent of filers have received a refund at an average of $478.20 per return.

• In fiscal 2006, the Processing Division of the Utah State Tax Commission deposited $6.6 billion in net revenues, including $2.2 billion in individual income tax revenues.
