From 'Elektra' to 'Penzance'
Dramas, musicals, comedies on stage this week in Utah

Performances are nightly except Sundays at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $20-$44 (www.tuacahn.com). Preshow dinners served on the plaza at 6 p.m. are $8 for children and $11 for adults.
"IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE, IT'S SUPERMAN," with music by Charles Strouse ("Bye Bye Birdie," "Annie" and "Applause"), played for only 129 performances on Broadway during the spring of 1966 but is finding new life as a resurrected campy musical. It will play Friday through Oct. 2 at the SCERA Center, 745 S. State, Orem.
Directed and choreographed by Mindy Young, the cast includes Phil Erickson in the title role, Karissa Flanagan as Lois Lane, Kevin Goertzen as the Daily Planet's narcissistic columnist Max Mencken, Marc Haddock as mad scientist Abner Sedgewick and Corinne Mayberry as Abner's girlfriend.
"COWBOY POETRY," featuring comedy and wisdom from three of Utah's premier cowboy poets Sam DeLeeuw, Dave Young and Doug Brewer will be showcased during the Babcock Performing Readers' first event of the 2006-07 season.
The program is Thursday, 7:30 p.m., in the newly renovated Little Theatre of the U. Union Building. Free admission, refreshments and parking (after 6 p.m.).
"THE TAMING OF THE SHREW," William Shakespeare's classic romantic comedy, is being staged by Wasatch Theatre Company from Friday through Sept. 30 in Columbus Center, 2530 S. 500 East.
Directed by J. C. Carter, the cast includes Katey Lynn Lowder as Katherine, David Hanson as Petruchio, Chelsey Richardson as Bianca, Miriam Latour as Baptista, Alex DeBirk as Lucentio, Mark Schulz as Hortensio, David Burrow as Gremio and Jared Shipley as Grumio.
Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 each (446-5657).
"WHEN WILL I DANCE?" Avalon Isle Women's Theatre Group's recent production about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, will have a free performance on Saturday in the Main Library Auditorium, 210 E. 400 South, commemorating Mexico's independence and honoring Kahlo's memory.
