There were 495 bankruptcy filings in August in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Utah, compared to 1,766 filings in August 2005.

Filings from January through August decreased by 76 percent compared with the same eight-month period in 2005, the court reported.

Bankruptcy figures for the past year have been skewed as Americans rushed to file before the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 went into effect on Oct. 17.
