HOLLYWOODLAND — ***Ben Affleck's performance as George Reeves is one of the highlights of this slowly engrossing but lengthy mystery/thriller. Running time: 126 minutes. R (profanity, violence, vulgarity, sex, gore, brief partial nudity, brief drugs, racial epithets).

THE PROTECTOR — **Thai action star Tony Jaa has plenty of astonishing fighting moves, but he lacks presence and the plot for this revenge-thriller is ridiculous. Running time: 92 minutes. R (violence, profanity, gore, vulgarity, brief nudity, brief sex, brief drugs, racial epithets).

MIDNIGHT MOVIE

THIS IS SPINAL TAP — *** 1/2 — Rob Reiner's hysterical 1984 mockumentary about a past-its-prime heavy-metal act. Running time: 82 minutes. R (vulgarity, profanity). (Tonight and Saturday, Tower)

SPECIAL SCREENINGS

THE GANGRENE FILM FESTIVAL 2006 — This spotlight on locally made, short comedy films returns for its seventh year. The films are not rated but may feature PG- rated content. (Tonight, 9 and 11 p.m., Ed Kenley Amphitheater, Layton)
