LEHI — The Lehi intersection where two people were killed in a collision on July 31 is being studied for possible traffic lights.

"Based on the unfortunate events that happened, we've already ordered a warrant study," said Geoff Dupaix, a Utah Department of Transportation spokesman.

If the study determines traffic lights are warranted at the intersection of 1700 West and Main Street (U-73), they could be installed within about eight months from now, he said.

The July 31 accident claimed the lives of Merrill Gomm, 80, and his son, Craig Gomm, 53, and three others were injured.

Merrill Gomm was driving a northbound car that pulled in front of an eastbound semitrailer truck, which hit the Gomms car, toppled and hit a westbound car.

Doug Bassett, UDOT Region 3 traffic engineer, spent time recently visiting the accident area and answering phone calls about the incident.

"It's been a hot topic around here," he said.

Residents said it is diffi- cult to see oncoming traffic at the intersection because of a large tree on the corner and a brick wall, and it's hard to enter because of the heavy traffic.

Lisa Owen of northwest Lehi wishes signal lights could be put in before school starts at the end of this month.

"It's sad that it happened, " she said of the accident. "It's a crazy intersection. I've had to cross that when my kids missed the bus and you go through with a prayer. Seriously, you do."
