Duke's manic episodes continued for much of Astin's childhood. He has since learned that ongoing difficulties are not unique to his mother's situation. Studies have shown that a person with bipolar disorder will often suffer serious symptoms for 10 or more years before an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan is made.

"The second she got diagnosed, it was like pushing a button," he said.

With that diagnosis more than 20 years ago, Duke has become a visible mental-health advocate. She became a spokeswoman for the National Institute of Mental Health and has written several books about life before and after her diagnosis.

Astin said his mother was fully supportive of his participation in the awareness campaign. "She said, 'I trust you,' " he said. "I know that she knows that I love her and I admire her and I respect her."
