Bates said resident Carla Davis had complained that the wallaroo spooked her horse one night while the Australian animal was loose, causing the horse to panic and injure its leg.

The county did not bring any charges against Pack for the incident and handed the case over to the state Division of Wildlife Resources to investigate if it is legal for Pack to keep the wallaroos.

Kevin Bunnell, mammal coordinator for the DWR, said wallaroos are generally a prohibited species in Utah, but Pack has special permits from the state to keep three wallaroos. Utah law prohibits wallaroos from being kept, collected or imported unless residents receive a variance to the rule from the state Wildlife Board.

Bunnell said the DWR will now investigate to see how the wallaroo escaped and if the Packs are properly caring for their wallaroos. He said Pack did not need the same permits for the rest of his animals because they are classified as being used for agricultural purposes, with the exception of the camel, which he said the division would investigate.

Coleman wants to see the wallaroos gone for good from the Summit County neighborhood.

"I just don't think somebody should have all these exotic animals," she said.
