Real Salt Lake got blitzed by an impressive display from the "other" Rafael Marquez Wednesday evening.

The name "Rafael Marquez" is known throughout the world as a star defender for Mexico's National Team. That Marquez plays for Barcelona, which recently won the Champions' League.

However, RSL found out on Wednesday that there is another "Rafael Marquez." This Marquez, who plies his trade for Mexican first-division side Morelia, torched Real in a friendly, notching a hat trick while leading his side to a comfortable 3-1 win.

Given the choice, though, coach John Ellinger was happy that RSL, composed almost entirely of reserve players, didn't have to deal with the Barcelona Marquez.

"I was glad it wasn't the same one, though," joked Ellinger, who said he hadn't heard of the Morelia Marquez before the game. "I'm glad Barcelona didn't have a vacation or training camp nearby down in St. George, and he was making the trip up here."

Despite the defeat, Ellinger was fairly pleased with the performance of his reserve side. Only one starter on Wednesday — Willis Forko — also started in Real's 3-1 win over New England last week.

"It was a good effort by, I thought, our guys," said Ellinger. "Everyone seems to say the second goal was an offside one, but I haven't seen a replay of it yet. But, for the most part, they competed well."

That second goal — which came in the 57th minute — helped Morelia take permanent control, though several RSL players thought it was offside. With Morelia leading 1-0, Luis Gabriel Rey played Marquez into a one-on-one situation with goalie Jay Nolly. With Nolly flying off his line, Marquez calmly finished past him.

Marquez completed his hat trick in the 75th minute.

Real spent most of the opening 45 minutes pinned inside its own half and fell behind 1-0 in the 40th minute, courtesy of Marquez' first strike.

The Monarchs nearly took an early lead after winning a penalty in the third minute. After Marquez was hauled down by central defender Cameron Knowles, he stepped up to take the ensuing penalty. Marquez took it fairly cleanly, but Nolly, diving to his left, fisted the ball away.

Wednesday's match, as expected, was quite physical. Referee Ramon Hernandez issued eight yellow cards and called 36 fouls. When Nik Besagno was tackled late by Hector Altamirano, Nelson Akwari got into a scuffle with Altamirano and was issued a yellow.

"I think the referee missed some of those calls," said Akwari. "I think he could've done a better job of keeping it under control. And if he doesn't, especially if you're playing at home, you've got to protect your players. "
