Nominees sought for awards in science

Nominations are due by Aug. 25 for the state's annual Governor's Medal for Science and Technology Awards.

"The Governor's Medal is awarded as a symbol of recognition to those individuals who have provided distinguished service to the state of Utah in science and technology," said a press release from the Governor's Office of Economic Development.

Anyone may make a nomination by using a document that is located on an Internet link for the yearly awards. The link is on the Web page for the Governor's Office of Economic Development, www.goed.utah.gov. Nominations must be mailed to the state science advisor and received by 5 p.m. Aug. 25.

They should be sent to: State Science Advisor, Governor's Office of Economic Development, 324 South State, Suite 500, Salt Lake City, UT 84111.

Four categories are available: work in academic, science eduction, industry and government. The industry award may include independent investors and entrepreneurs. A fifth category, for team efforts, has been recognized in the past but is now discontinued.

Nominees must be residents of Utah. Those who are selected from the first round of applications will be asked to submit a more complete application package.

The State Advisory Council on Science and Technology will administer the award and recommend nominees to Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. The governor will recognize Utahns who have made a significant contributions to science and technology.
