Expression is illustrator's forte

The BYU exhibit includes a self-portrait in graphite and "Head of a Young Girl #1," "Portrait Study Patsy Howard," and "Portrait Study Bob Adams," in charcoal and white chalk.

His work in realism has survived the onslaught of modernism.

"I emphasize drawing, but it doesn't get the attention it deserves unless you're dead 200 years," he said.

Silverman was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1990 and this year received the Geismann Memorial Invitation Retrospective Exhibition.
