Ogden Police Chief Jon Greiner, who won the GOP nomination in Senate District 18 by besting Sen. Dave Thomas, R-South Weber, in Tuesday's primary, has also said he plans to keep his job if elected in November.

Greiner said if he wins, he'd be able to use the two weeks of leave provided by Ogden for such service as well as vacation time during the 45-day annual legislative session.

He said he would be donating "my vacation each year to law enforcement to make sure we have a voice." Serving as Ogden's police chief, Greiner said, is a 60-hour-a-week job.

Greiner's opponent in the November election, Democrat Stuart Reid, said the police chief's plans won't be an issue in their race. "I don't think there's any problem with it. He and I are friends," Reid, an economic development consultant, said.

Reid said Ogden is his biggest client. He is Ogden's former community and economic development director and a former Salt Lake City councilman who unsuccessfully challenged Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson in 1999.
