$2,500 woodblock is first of its kind in paper's art collection
Teare's woodblock is the first of its kind in the newspaper's art collection, which includes many oils and watercolors. This piece will help diversify the collection, one of the newspaper's goals.
First place in the competition, with a $1,000 award, went to Clay Wagstaff for his oil-on-board painting "Mountain #3."
John Erickson took second place and $800 with his starkly rendered night scene, "7th East."
Third place, with $600, was given to David Meikle for his finely rendered "Cliffs Above."
Five noncash honorable mentions were also awarded: Jeffery Pugh for his oil painting, "Peoa"; H. Shane Ross for his opaque watercolor, "Duchesne Fields"; Eric Zschiesche for his oil, "Wasatch Spring"; Harrison Groutage for his acrylic, "Winter Rain"; and Rebecca Livermore for her watercolor, "Timpanogos Autumn."
During the exhibit's run at the Museum of Utah Art and History, which will be open to the public July 8-24, visitors will be allowed to vote for their personal favorites. Near the show's conclusion, two more honors People's Choice awards will be presented, each worth $200.
A complete list of all artists participating in this year's show will be published in this Sunday's Arts section of the Deseret Morning News.
