LOGAN (AP) — Twin boys born this week at Logan Regional Hospital had a combined birth weight of more than 17 pounds, with one of the babies delivered at 10 pounds, 4 ounces.

"When they were actually born everybody was just stunned," Dr. James Benedict, who delivered the twins by Caesarean section, said Wednesday. "It's still the talk of the hospital."

Dakota Lyon was the heavier of the two. Dillan Lyon weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces. Both of them were heavier than the average twin birth weight of about 5 1/2 pounds.

Benedict said in his 30 years of obstetrics, the heaviest twin he delivered was about 7 1/2 pounds.

Dakota "surprised us," said mother Monica Lyon. "As long as they were healthy, I didn't care."

The twins were delivered nearly two weeks early because of their size.

Monica said this pregnancy wasn't any different from that of her 3-year-old daughter, who weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces when she was born.

Monica said one factor in the babies' size might be her height. She's 6-foot-3.

"I think it's just because I'm tall," Monica said. "They had a lot of room to grow."

Benedict said both twins are considered big.
