"A lot of the top-10 business schools emphasize Fortune 500 jobs, or getting a large consulting job," he said. "In Utah, we put much more emphasis on starting your own business. Students come to Utah from elsewhere because of that emphasis."

And that means that, nationally, Utah holds its own in EOY contests.

"If you look at Utah's success and what our population base is, a state of, what, 2.5 million people in a country of 300 million, we've had some amazing success," Brittain said, noting that companies must be "pretty healthy" to qualify for entry in the national EOY competition.

"I've got a couple in mind for this year," Brittain said, noting that award recipients from 2006 plus the previous two years are eligible to enter this year's nationals. "Looking at the pool of recipients, I think we've got some really good possibilities."

That's one thing that never changes about EOY, he said.

"Every year I think, 'There just can't be more good ones out there,' " Brittain said, laughing. "I think I've seen it all, and suddenly these firms appear with a great story and a lot of success."
