Within hours of the earthquake that hit parts of Indonesia Saturday, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had set up a relief kitchen in a local chapel.

Volunteers relocated to an area hardest hit and have been serving meals ever since. A statement from the LDS Church says that by Sunday morning 1,500 meals were ready for delivery. Since then approximately 2,000 meals have been prepared each day for delivery to areas that have little or no access to food.

A local LDS Church leader in Surakarta expressed his amazement at how quickly relief efforts were established. Several community kitchens were unable to operate as they had no food. In addition to food, the LDS Church delivered medical supplies, bedding and refrigerators to the area Wednesday.
